Do you find it a challenge to read your text messages on the phone without glasses? Has newspaper print become difficult to read without glasses? Do you now have to read a restaurant menu at arms length without glasses?

People who have enjoyed good vision all their lives gradually come up against the fact that after 40 their eyes are no longer as young as they used to be and need glasses to focus things close up.

People who once had to wear glasses for seeing distance may also find that they are losing the ability to see things closer to them. All these signs point to the onset of age-related presbyopia or age-related long-sight.

The condition of age-related presbyopia is totally natural, the eye muscles inside the eye can no longer change the shape of the natural lens inside the eye as it hardens with age and so the ability to see things close up is also lost.

The monovision treatment for Presbyopia

Some myopic patients decide not to have laser vision corrective surgery because of presbyopia, but most prefer to have clear unaided distance vision rather than near vision.

One way round this is the concept of ‘monovision’, where refractive surgery is used to correct one eye for clear distance vision, and the other for clear near vision. If you are interested in this, you can discuss it further by telephone or at your assessment.

Implants designed to overcome Presbyopia

We also offer new lens techniques that go some way towards restoring the eye’s natural ability to focus for near. You will find more information on these implants in the premium cataract lens surgery section and again you can discuss this further by contacting us.

Can you have laser eye surgery if you have Presbyopia?

Some patients who are short-sighted, long-sighted or astigmatic and have presbyopia, on the other hand, decide that relying on reading glasses for near vision is acceptable as long as laser eye surgery can correct their distance vision.

At the assessment, we will conduct a thorough examination of your eyes that includes assessing our prescription, and carry out a vast array of additional tests that may influence your suitability for laser eye surgery.
